Vayu Veer program empowers marginalized groups to combat pollution through citizen science

Innovative citizen-led air monitoring in Jamshedpur reveals alarming pollution levels, spurring grassroots action for cleaner air through the Vayu Veer program.

JAMSHEDPUR – Clean Air Jharkhand has implemented the innovative Vayu Veer program, which involves the participation of youth and women from vulnerable communities in the monitoring and mitigation of alarming air pollution levels.

The Vayu Veer initiative is a ray of hope in Jamshedpur’s battle against air pollution, inspiring those who are most impacted by poor air quality to take the lead in advocating for change.

The innovative Clean Air Jharkhand program has brought air quality concerns to the forefront, exposing alarming pollution levels through community-driven monitoring initiatives.

A month-long air quality assessment was conducted by four dedicated Vayu Veers, who discovered consistent infractions of national standards for particulate matter.

The citizen science report "Month in My Life" revealed alarming findings, with PM2.5 levels in certain regions reaching as high as 607 µg/m³, which is significantly higher than the national limit of 60 µg/m³.

Ravi Kumar, an environmental scientist affiliated with the initiative, expressed his apprehension regarding the air quality of Jamshedpur. "It’s crucial that we act swiftly to address this public health issue."

Participants encountered air quality levels that varied from "Moderate" to "Beyond Limit" during the monitoring period, as indicated by the Central Pollution Control Board’s Air Quality Index Analysis.

Dr. Niramal Shukla of Clean Air Jharkhand underscored the significance of community engagement, asserting, "We are cultivating a grassroots movement for cleaner air by empowering those most impacted."

The Vayu Veers are illustrating the potential of community-driven environmental action by advocating for enhanced air quality monitoring and public access to emission data.

As the program acquires momentum, it could serve as a model for involving marginalized communities in environmental initiatives, potentially facilitating the implementation of similar initiatives throughout India.
