RANCHI – Justice B.R. Sarangi (Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi) has been appointed as the new Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court, filling a position that had been vacant since December 28, 2023.

Justice Sarangi, previously a judge at the Orissa High Court, was recommended for the position by the Supreme Court Collegium on December 27, 2023.

This appointment comes as a significant development for Jharkhand’s judiciary, ending the interim arrangement where Justice S. Chandrasekhar had been serving as the Acting Chief Justice.

Born on July 20, 1962, in Pantikheri Sasan village of Nayagarh district, Odisha, Justice Sarangi comes from a family with a background in public service. His father, Banchhanidhi Sarangi, served as a financial advisor to the Odisha government.

Justice Sarangi’s legal career spans various areas including criminal, civil, labor, revenue, education, and taxation cases.

His dedication to the legal profession was recognized in 2002 when he was awarded a gold medal by the then Chief Justice of Orissa High Court, P.K. Balasubramanyan.
