First FIR Under New Criminal Code Filed In Ranchi Kotwali Thana
Kotwali Police Station Registers Theft Case Using Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
The incident marks the local implementation of India’s recently enacted criminal justice reforms.
RANCHI – Kotwali police station recorded the city’s first First Information Report (FIR) under the newly implemented Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), marking a significant shift in criminal procedure.
The case, involving a theft at a medicine shop in Upper Bazar, was registered under sections 303(2) and 305(a) of the BNS.
"This FIR represents the transition from the Indian Penal Code to our new criminal justice system," a senior police official stated.
Shop owner Rashmi Kumari Chaudhary reported the theft of approximately Rs 1.25 lakh and eight silver coins from her establishment, Rashmi Enterprises.
Chaudhary discovered the break-in upon opening her shop on Shraddhanand Road, finding the shutter lock broken and cash box emptied.
Previously, such cases were registered under section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The shift to BNS is part of a nationwide overhaul of criminal laws that came into effect on July 1, 2024.
This change marks the end of British-era laws, introducing three new codes: BNS, Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).
Legal experts anticipate significant changes in India’s criminal justice system following the implementation of these new laws.
Local authorities are conducting training sessions to familiarize law enforcement personnel with the new legal framework.
The police have initiated an investigation into the theft case under the newly applicable BNS sections.
