Jharkhand High Court Summons Health Secretary Over Hospital Hostage Case

Court Demands Explanation On Alleged Patient Detention At Ranchi Hospital

The incident has prompted a broader inquiry into private hospital practices and infrastructure across Jharkhand.

RANCHI – The Jharkhand High Court has taken serious note of an alleged patient detention at Genetic Super-Specialty Hospital in Bariatu, Ranchi, summoning the Health Secretary to appear on July 18.

Justices Sujit Narayan Prasad and AK Rai directed the government to provide comprehensive details about all hospitals in Ranchi district.

"We need a full report on hospital infrastructure, basic facilities, and fire safety measures," stated Justice Prasad during the hearing.

The court’s intervention follows complaints of a woman, Sangeeta Kumari, reportedly held hostage over unpaid medical bills.

Kumari’s husband, Mangalu Singh, a MNREGA laborer from Torpa, Khunti, claimed to have paid Rs 2.60 lakh but faced demands for an additional Rs 1.60 lakh.

"This incident raises serious questions about patient rights and hospital practices," remarked a legal expert familiar with the case.

The court has requested information on irregularities in treatment and billing processes under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana at private hospitals across Jharkhand.

This case has sparked broader discussions about healthcare accessibility and ethical practices in private medical institutions.

Patient advocacy groups have welcomed the court’s intervention, hoping it will lead to stricter oversight of hospital operations.

The Health Department is expected to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged hostage situation and related complaints.

This development could potentially lead to significant reforms in Jharkhand’s healthcare system and hospital management practices.
