MANOHARPUR – Two teenage boys died on the spot on Sunday afternoon after a scooty they were riding lost control and plunged off a culvert bridge in the Purana Manoharpur area.
The deceased have been identified as Watan Lohar, 14, son of Sanjay Lohar of Purana Manoharpur, and Om Sandil, 17, son of Shiv Kumar Sandil of Manipur locality. The accident occurred at around 12:30 pm.
According to eyewitnesses, the two boys had borrowed a scooty from a friend. They were on their way to a nearby ground to practise riding it.
However, while crossing the culvert bridge, the vehicle went out of control. Both boys fell directly below the bridge structure.
They sustained severe injuries to their heads, legs and other parts of their bodies. On the other hand, despite being rushed to Manoharpur Community Health Centre with the help of local residents, they could not be saved.
Dr Vigyani, who was on duty at the CHC, declared both of them dead on arrival.
The tragedy has left both families inconsolable. Meanwhile, a pall of grief has descended over the entire locality.
It is worth noting that incidents involving minors riding two-wheelers without licences or adequate training remain a serious road safety concern across Jharkhand. In Jamshedpur alone, 31 road accidents were recorded in April this year, resulting in 24 deaths.
Police received information about the fatal accident soon after it occurred and have initiated action in the case. Further investigation is underway.
The underage riding of motor vehicles continues to pose grave risks. Both boys were below the legal driving age of 18 years.
