JNAC Conducts Demolition Drive in Sakchi SNP Area
Shops in Basements of Two Buildings Razed Amid Protests
Local authorities enforce High Court order, citing violations of approved building plans.
JAMSHEDPUR – The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) carried out a demolition operation against shops illegally constructed in the basements of two buildings in the Sakchi SNP area, sparking protests from local shopkeepers.
"We’re enforcing the High Court’s directive to restore these spaces to their approved uses," stated a JNAC official.
Key Developments
Demolitions took place at Shoppers Square Shopping Mall and another building owned by the Modi family.
Shopkeepers at Shoppers Square protested against Jusco officials’ involvement, briefly disrupting the operation.
Sakchi police and JNAC officials intervened to calm the situation.
Enforcement Details
Ten shops in the basement of Holding No. 26 and five in Holding No. 88 were demolished.
Dhalbhum SDO Parul Singh deployed several officials as magistrates to oversee the operation.
Ongoing Issues
The approved plan for Shoppers Square designates the basement for parking, not retail.
A shop on the first floor needs demolition to construct a proper parking ramp.
JNAC has issued six notices to the building owner regarding these violations.
Similar violations were observed at Holding No. 88, requiring further demolitions near Sheetla Mandir.
This enforcement action highlights the ongoing challenges in urban development and the tensions between commercial interests and regulatory compliance in Jamshedpur.
