Jharkhand’s updated electoral rolls show a diverse voter base of 2.54 crore, with preparations underway for the Lok Sabha elections expected between April and May 2024.

RANCHI – The Election Commission of India has been preparing briskly the electoral rolls in Jharkhand, revealing a total of 2.54 crore electors.

This diverse electorate includes 1.29 crores male, 1.24 crores female, and 430 third gender voters, alongside 3.58 lakh voters identified as PWD.

Voters aged 80 and above total 3.26 lakhs, while the 18-19 age group comprises 7.86 lakhs.

The largest demographic, those between 20-29 years, accounts for 62.33 lakh voters.

With the 17th Lok Sabha’s tenure ending on June 16, 2024, India gears up for its next general elections, where 543 Lok Sabha members will be elected.

The previous elections in April-May 2019 saw the formation of the union government by the National Democratic Alliance, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party, with Narendra Modi as Prime Minister.

The electoral process follows the first-past-the-post voting system, with recent amendments eliminating reserved seats for the Anglo-Indian community.

Voter eligibility requires Indian citizenship, age 18 or older, residency in the polling area, registration on the electoral roll, and a valid identification card.

Article 83 mandates Lok Sabha elections every five years, ensuring democratic continuity.

The election schedule for the 18th Lok Sabha will be announced by the Election Commission, with new directives to prevent officials from influencing the electoral process through strategic postings.

The Commission has emphasized a zero-tolerance policy against actions that disturb the electoral level playing field, applying its transfer policy rigorously to maintain integrity in the upcoming elections.

Electoral Integrity Measures

The Election Commission’s latest directive aims to prevent any undue influence by ensuring transferred officers are not posted within the same Parliamentary Constituency, enhancing electoral fairness.

Voter Demographics

Jharkhand’s electoral rolls reflect a significant youth presence, with over 7.86 lakh voters in the 18-19 age bracket, indicating a potential impact on the upcoming elections’ dynamics.
