Tata Steel Advances in Sustainability with New Certifications

Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar and Meramandali Achieve ResponsibleSteel Certification

Tata Steel sets a new sustainability benchmark as its Kalinganagar and Meramandali plants are awarded the ResponsibleSteel Certification, adding to its Jamshedpur plant’s prior achievement.

JAMSHEDPUR – An independent assessor’s thorough evaluation has confirmed the commitment of Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar and Meramandali sites to ResponsibleSteel’s standards, marking a significant stride in sustainable steel production.

The ResponsibleSteel initiative, the first of its kind targeting the global steel industry, has praised Tata Steel for its continuous improvement in health, safety, and community engagement at both the newly certified sites.

At Meramandali, stakeholder discussions underscore Tata Steel’s dedication to community welfare and worker safety, evidencing a proactive approach to health and safety enhancements post-acquisition.

Tata Kalinganagar’s efforts in community engagement, including housing, health, and education initiatives, reflect a steadfast commitment to addressing past relocation issues and protests through tangible improvements.

Annie Heaton, CEO of ResponsibleSteel, lauds Tata Steel for its environmental and social diligence during the certification audits, particularly noting the company’s strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and advancing water stewardship.

Tata Steel’s aim to have all its Indian steelmaking sites certified by 2025 aligns with its broader sustainability goals, as highlighted by CEO T.V. Narendran’s acknowledgment of the collaborative effort leading to these certifications.

The ResponsibleSteel certification for Tata Steel’s Kalinganagar and Meramandali plants signifies a major leap forward in the company’s sustainability journey, building on the foundation laid by the Jamshedpur plant’s certification in 2022.

With over 90% of its steel production in India now under ResponsibleSteel certification, Tata Steel reinforces its leadership in sustainable manufacturing practices.

Tata Steel’s participation in the ResponsibleSteel program since its inception showcases its pioneering role in promoting sustainable practices within the steel industry in India.
