Tata Motors Leads EV Market with Punch EV Launch

Tata Punch EV Debuts Amidst Record Sales, Targets 50% EV Portfolio by 2030

Tata Motors anticipates high demand for the Punch EV, its latest electric model, following a 62% YoY growth in EV sales, with EVs projected to be 50% of its sales by 2030.

JAMSHEDPUR – With Tata Motors already dominating over 75% of the electric vehicle market in India, the launch of their newest all-electric model, the Punch EV, is set to further strengthen their position.

In the calendar year 2023, Tata Motors achieved a record-breaking sales figure of 69,153 electric vehicles, representing a significant 62 percent year-over-year growth from 43,451 units in 2022.

The company’s ambitious projection indicates that by 2030, electric vehicles (EVs) will constitute half of their total sales.

By 2025, Tata’s EV lineup is expected to expand to eight models, with the Punch EV designed to complement the existing Tiago EV and Nexon EV without market overlap.

Currently, Tata’s electric portfolio includes the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Nexon EV, and Punch EV. The upcoming launches of the Curvv and Harrier EVs this year, followed by the Sierra EV and Altroz EV next year, further indicate Tata Motors‘ commitment to electrification.

Financially, EVs currently contribute 12 to 15 percent in volume and 17 to 20 percent in revenue, a figure expected to increase to 15 to 17 percent by the end of 2024.

Shailesh Chandra, the Managing Director of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, highlighted the Punch EV’s appeal to younger buyers, noting its strategic positioning between the Tiago EV and Nexon EV.

The company is prepared to address potential waiting times for the Punch EV by ramping up capacity at its Sanand, Gujarat facility.

Chandra emphasized the diverse utility of Tata’s EV lineup, with the Punch EV offering over 400km range, appealing to a broader market segment, including tech-savvy, price-conscious consumers under 35.

The recent opening of two exclusive EV stores in Gurugram and plans to establish more such outlets nationwide underscore Tata Motors‘ commitment to expanding its electric vehicle footprint.
