Jamshedpur Gopal Maidan gyrates on drum beats as thousands share joy in Tusu Mela

MP Bidyut Baran Mahato and Astik Mahato lead festivities in Tusu Mela

Jamshedpur: The Jharkhandvasi Ekta Manch hosted a huge Tusu Mela at Bistupur’s Gopal Maidan in Jamshedpur on Saturday. The Tusu Mela saw heavy footfall as hundreds of members of different local communities attended it amid joy and festivities.

The fair was held after a gap of 3 years as it had been postponed for the previous two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it was held this year without any issue.

The event was attended by the Jamshedpur MP Bidyut Baran Mahato, the Chief Convenor Astik Mahato, Phanindra Mahato, and other prominent members of local communities.

Visitors came not only from Jharkhand, but also from Orissa and Bengal, to enjoy the traditional dances and songs on offer in the Mela.

The Mela had on display idols of Mother Tusu Deity and also included traditional ‘Chowdal’ competitions, as well as a traditional ‘Budhi Gaadi’ dance competition.

All competition winners received cash prizes.

This mela was started in 2006 by the then MP of Jamshedpur late Sunil Mahato and has been held annually since then, barring the previous two years when it could not be held due to covid restrictions.

Tusu festival is a vibrant and colorful celebration of Jharkhand’s rich cultural heritage. It is a celebration of the arrival of the harvest season, with people coming together to sing, dance, and compete in various events. The Tusu festival is an important cultural celebration that embodies the spirit of the people of Jharkhand.

In Jamshedpur, Tusu Mela has become a part of Tusu festival celebrations as thousands of people converge on Gopal Maidan to share their joy and festive spirit in traditional manner.

The festival is held in January and is an opportunity for people to come together to sing, dance, and compete in various events.

The Tusu puja is one of the most important aspects of the Tusu festival. During this ceremony, a clay statue of the goddess Tusu is decorated with flowers and other decorations.

The statue is then placed in a temporary temple, and food and other offerings are made to the goddess.
