In a first for Jamshedpur, Congressmen demonstrate against SSP Dr. M Tamil Vanan, burn effigy

Jamshedpur: In a surprise move, with still unclear reasons, some Congressmen claiming to be supporters of Health Minister Banna Gupta, have opened a front against the Jamshedpur SSP Dr. M Tamil Vanan.

It is still not clear whether the protests were prompted by political reasons or other motives.

A number of Congressmen, claiming to be supporters of Congress leader and state Health Minister Banna Gupta, have openly come out against the SSP Dr. M Tamil Vanan. They demonstrated against the SSP and even burnt his effigy in Kadma on Wednesday. This is the first instance in the recent history of Jamshedpur, when supporters of a political party have come out on the streets to burn the effigy of an IPS officer.

The protesting Congressmen, claiming to be supporters of Banna Gupta, claimed that the crime graph has increased in the district since after the current SSP has taken over the reins of Jamshedpur police. They also charged that the police are harassing innocent persons. They urged the state government to immediately transfer the SSP.

It may be added here that the SSP Dr. M Tamil Vanan was promoted to the cadre of Senior IPS officer only 15 days back.

The fact that a political party and an ally of the ruling coalition has openly come out to protest against the SSP is raising several questions.

Analysts were left wondering whether there was something that has touched some raw nerve somewhere? Because the crime graph has not seen much of a dramatic spurt in the recent times. In fact, most of the crime cases have been taken to their logical conclusion in recent times and the crime graph has not shown any sudden worsening in recent times, quite contrary to what is being claimed by the protesting Congressmen. The city police too has been functioning rather well, if compared with the past crime records.

The sudden protest against an IPS officer on the streets with political connotation has left analysts wondering, if there was something more to it than what meets the eye and what is being claimed at the ground level.

In the last few days, one person was shot dead by unknown assailant in Mango, while a Dawood Ibrahim aide was arrested from Sahara City Duplex in Mango by Gujarat ATS team.

No reaction from the police department or any other political party has come yet on the issue of demonstration against the SSP and his effigy burning.

Babloo Naushad, leader of the protestors, said that this effigy burning was organised on the instructions of Health Minister Banna Gupta.

Many were left wondering whether a sitting minister needs to instruct his supporters to demonstrate against an SSP and whether he cannot resolve all the issues at the government level itself.

Or does it signal some sort of political differences within the state government and ruling alliance?
