JAMSHEDPUR – Two women were detained by a mob of residents in Kunwar Basti, under Mango police station limits, on Sunday morning, after a local man alleged they had entered his home and attempted to abduct his child.
According to Baleswar Bera, a resident of Kunwar Basti, he and his family were asleep when the two women entered their dwelling. He alleged that the women were trying to take his child away. His sudden awakening caused him to raise an alarm, drawing a large number of neighbours to the spot.
However, police have so far not established whether the claim of attempted child abduction is factually accurate. The women were apprehended by the crowd amid widespread suspicion. Some members of the mob also assaulted them before they were taken into custody.
Mango police station personnel responded swiftly after receiving information about the incident. Officers arrived at the scene and removed both women from the agitated crowd, taking them to the police station for questioning.
The women have since been held in police custody for interrogation. Their purpose in entering the house has not yet been determined. Police said that the matter was being examined from all angles and that the facts would only emerge after the investigation was completed.
Meanwhile, the police appealed to residents to avoid rumours and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. Various accounts of the incident were said to be circulating in the locality following the episode.
The Mango area of Jamshedpur has been the site of several law-and-order incidents in recent weeks, prompting increased police attention to the locality. Child abduction rumours have triggered mob violence in various parts of Jharkhand in the past, with authorities repeatedly issuing advisories urging people to verify information before reacting.
