Key Points:

  • Birsanagar PM Awas allottees felicitate Saryu Roy at his Bistupur residence on Monday
  • Urban Development Minister Sudivy Kumar Sonu announced key handover for June 19
  • Roy flags cracks in some flats, likely due to use of inferior bricks, after personal inspection

JAMSHEDPUR – Beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana flats in Birsanagar gathered at the Bistupur residence of Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy on Monday afternoon to felicitate him, a day after Urban Development Minister Sudivy Kumar Sonu announced that the flat keys would be handed over to allottees on June 19.

People began arriving at Roy’s residence from around 2:30 PM. They welcomed him with bouquets of flowers and a shawl and offered him sweets. The gathering was held as a felicitation and thanksgiving ceremony. Residents said Roy had stood with them through their long struggle and that without his intervention, their cause would have gone unheard. “We would have remained empty-handed,” said one allottee.

Speaking on the occasion, Roy said the day was one of special happiness for him as well. “On June 19, you will receive the keys to your flats,” he said. “I salute the struggle you have waged. You have shown tremendous patience.”

Roy cautioned the allottees that some difficulties could arise once they moved in, since no one had been living in the flats so far and some infrastructure-related work remained pending. He said it would be better if that work was carried out while the residents were already there, as they could personally monitor and supervise it.

He noted that the scheme had been launched in 2019 and that the keys were being handed over only in 2026, calling the delay considerable. However, he added, better late than never. Roy disclosed that he had personally visited and inspected the flats three days earlier. He said the construction was largely satisfactory, but that cracks were visible at certain places inside, which he attributed to the possible use of inferior bricks during construction. He confirmed that a government-level order for handing over the flats to the allottees had already been issued and that work was progressing at a fast pace.

Roy also expressed gratitude to Urban Development Minister Sudivy Kumar Sonu for his cooperation in bringing the matter to a resolution. The Jamshedpur PM Awas project had been at the centre of a prolonged credit war between Roy and MLA Purnima Sahu over who deserved recognition for pushing the key handover forward.
