JAMSHEDPUR – A chain-snatching incident in the Telco police station area on Monday evening led to a police encounter in which one of the two accused was injured before both were apprehended at the Jharkhand Armed Police compound near Surya Mandir in Telco.
Two bike-borne criminals snatched a gold chain from a woman in the Telco area and fled the scene. As soon as the incident was reported, police from Telco, Sidhgora and several other police stations swung into action, cordoning off the area and giving chase to the fleeing accused.
During the pursuit, the criminals opened fire on the police. According to sources, the accused fired approximately five rounds in an attempt to escape and evade capture. However, they eventually rode into the Jharkhand Armed Police compound situated near Surya Mandir in the Sidhgora police station area. JAP personnel present at the location overpowered and detained both men.
One of the two accused sustained injuries during the operation. Police recovered a pistol and more than 10 live cartridges from their possession. The recovery of a pistol and live ammunition from chain snatchers pointed to the increasingly armed nature of street crime in the city. Earlier this month, five persons had been arrested in a separate firing case in Jugsalai, also with weapons recovered.
No official statement had been issued by police authorities at the time of filing this report. Officers said that full details would be shared once the investigation was complete. Kolhan police had recently been reviewed by the ADG with directions for swift disposal of pending cases. All aspects of Monday’s encounter were being examined by the investigating teams.
