CHAIBASA – Ten Naxalites were killed in a major encounter in West Singhbhum’s Saranda forest on Thursday morning, including one high-value militant carrying a Rs 1 crore bounty.
A joint team received intelligence about Naxalites planning a major incident. The information reached senior officials of Jharkhand Police early Thursday. Subsequently, CRPF Cobra and Jharkhand Jaguar units launched a coordinated operation.
The encounter occurred in Kumdi village forest under Kiriburu jurisdiction. Security forces deployed two helicopters for aerial monitoring purposes. Meanwhile, ground troops conducted extensive search operations in the dense forest terrain.
Operation Unfolds
Naxalites detected the presence of approaching security personnel. They immediately opened indiscriminate fire on the forces. In response, security personnel took strategic positions swiftly. A fierce gun battle ensued between both sides.
Sources confirmed that ten militants were neutralized during the exchange. One deceased Naxalite reportedly carried a bounty worth Rs 1 crore. However, official confirmation was still awaited at filing time.
Ongoing Military Operation
The encounter remained active when this report was prepared. Security forces continued their intensive combing operations across the region. Moreover, authorities maintained strict surveillance over the entire operational zone.
The operation marks a significant achievement for security forces fighting Naxalism. Saranda forest has long been a stronghold for militant activities. On the other hand, recent operations have weakened their network considerably.
Strategic Importance
West Singhbhum’s Saranda region witnesses frequent anti-Naxal operations currently. The area borders Odisha and provides militants strategic cover. In addition, dense vegetation makes surveillance challenging for security agencies.
Recent months have seen increased deployment of paramilitary forces. The central government aims to eliminate Naxalism by 2026. Furthermore, specialized units like CRPF Cobra have intensified their operations significantly.
Previous Encounters
This latest operation follows several successful missions in the region. Earlier, security forces had neutralized multiple high-profile militants here. Besides, recovered weapons indicated the militants’ combat readiness levels.
Intelligence agencies continue monitoring Naxalite movements across Jharkhand borders. Coordination between state and central forces has improved substantially. Consequently, anti-insurgency operations have yielded better results recently.
Authorities expect more details once the combing operation concludes. Security forces remain deployed to prevent any retaliatory attacks. Meanwhile, local villagers have been advised to remain cautious.
