Former Councillors Begin Hunger Strike Against Adityapur Nagar Nigam

Protest Over Tax Collection, Lack of Civic Amenities Begins Saturday

Key Points:

  • Dozen former councillors start indefinite hunger strike near civic body office
  • Protesters allege arbitrary tax collection without basic civic services
  • Approved schemes remain unimplemented despite foundation stone laying ceremonies

SERAIKELA – Former councillors of Adityapur Nagar Nigam in Seraikela district launched an indefinite hunger strike on Saturday. The protest targets the civic body’s alleged administrative failures.

Around a dozen ex-councillors are sitting on protest. The demonstration site is near the municipal corporation office. However, the area remains unclean and filthy.

Officials received prior information about the protest. Despite this, no cleaning was arranged at the venue. The lack of sanitation highlights administrative insensitivity, protesters claimed.

Former councillors raised multiple grievances during the demonstration. “Arbitrary taxes are being collected for two years,” said a protester. Meanwhile, civic amenities remain unavailable to residents.

Sanitation services are inadequate across the municipal area. In addition, essential infrastructure facilities are missing. The corporation fails to provide basic public services.

Board meetings approved several development schemes previously. Foundation stones were laid for these projects ceremonially. Nevertheless, implementation has not begun on any project.

“Schemes exist only on paper,” said a former councillor. The gap between announcements and execution frustrates residents. Moreover, officials show no urgency in completing works.

The protesters outlined their demands clearly to authorities. They want proper civic services for taxpayers. Furthermore, they demand implementation of approved development projects.

“Our strike continues until demands are addressed,” protesters stated. The movement will remain indefinite without official response. However, authorities have not initiated dialogue yet.

The hunger strike tests the administration’s responsiveness. On the other hand, it highlights civic governance issues. Besides, it raises questions about municipal accountability.

The protest location’s filthy condition symbolizes broader problems. Sanitation failures extend throughout the municipal jurisdiction. Residents face similar neglect in their localities.

Tax collection continues without corresponding service delivery. This creates public resentment against the civic body. The strike gives voice to widespread dissatisfaction.
