Tata Steel Earns Top ‘A’ Rating in CDP Climate Assessment

Company secures leadership position for fourth time in supplier engagement

Key Points:

  • Tata Steel receives highest ‘A’ rating in CDP 2024 assessment
  • Recognition marks fourth leadership position in six years
  • Company focuses on reducing Scope 3 emissions across value chain

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel has achieved the top ‘A’ rating in CDP’s 2024 Supplier Engagement Assessment, marking its fourth leadership recognition in six years for climate action initiatives.

The CDP Supplier Engagement Assessment evaluates companies on climate change efforts. It measures performance across governance, targets, and emissions management. Moreover, the assessment focuses on value chain engagement strategies.

Tata Steel secured the highest possible rating this year. The company has maintained consistent leadership since 2019. However, this marks significant progress in environmental sustainability.

Rajiv Mangal leads Safety, Health & Sustainability at Tata Steel. He emphasized the importance of supplier alignment. “Net Zero journey requires comprehensive value chain participation,” he stated.

The executive highlighted emerging global challenges facing steel manufacturers. Carbon taxes in export markets create additional pressure. Furthermore, Scope 3 emissions reduction remains a priority.

Peeyush Gupta oversees Group Strategic Procurement and Supply Chain. He noted steel sector’s unique emission challenges. “Hard to abate greenhouse gases demand collective action,” Gupta explained.

The steel industry requires extensive supplier networks for operations. Downstream suppliers and contractors play crucial roles. In addition, comprehensive climate action needs universal participation.

Tata Steel operates an integrated value chain system currently. The network spans from mining to finished products. Meanwhile, suppliers, ports, and manufacturing units form key components.

The company includes stockyards and processing facilities too. Logistics partners and end customers complete the chain. Besides, the Green Supply Chain initiative drives sustainability efforts.

Sustainable practices include third-party logistics implementation across operations. Modern warehousing systems enhance efficiency significantly. On the other hand, energy-efficient ships reduce transportation emissions.

Coastal shipping provides eco-friendly transportation alternatives for cargo. Digital tools streamline material flows throughout the network. However, continuous improvement remains the primary focus.

Regular environmental assessments engage suppliers in sustainability initiatives. Screening processes evaluate partner performance on climate metrics. Moreover, best practice sharing sessions promote knowledge transfer.

Customer collaboration involves joint sustainability initiatives between stakeholders. Life cycle information sharing enhances product transparency. Furthermore, supply chain recognition programs motivate sustainability efforts.

Tata Steel participates in the Sea Cargo Charter initiative. The global program advances decarbonisation across shipping sectors. In contrast, local initiatives focus on regional impact.

The CDP assessment validates Tata Steel’s comprehensive climate strategy. Recognition motivates continued environmental leadership in steel manufacturing. Besides, the rating demonstrates measurable progress toward sustainability goals.
