High Court Order Prompts Review of Medical Facilities, Equipment, and Doctor Deployment at Prison

JAMSHEDPUR — The district jail of East Singhbhum was jointly inspected by the Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority and the Civil Surgeon of the district, in compliance with a Jharkhand High Court order.
The inspection was carried out pursuant to a High Court directive dated March 11, 2026, passed in Cr. Appeal (DB) No. 372 of 2023. The order had been communicated through letter No. 3680-3703 dated March 16, 2026. Kumar Saurabh Tripathi, Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, East Singhbhum, and Sahir Paul, Civil Surgeon, East Singhbhum, conducted the joint inspection.
During the visit, the inspecting officials focused particularly on the medical arrangements available to inmates housed in the facility. The health problems being faced by prisoners were reviewed in detail. In addition, the availability and operational condition of medical equipment inside the jail was examined.
The deployment of doctors within the prison was also assessed. Officials emphasised the need to ensure that adequate medical facilities remained available to inmates at all times. Moreover, they stressed that all necessary equipment should be kept in working order and that qualified doctors should be present at the jail on a regular basis.
On the other hand, relevant jail authorities were issued specific directives to ensure that prisoners received timely and appropriate healthcare. The inspection was carried out strictly in compliance with the directions of the Jharkhand High Court, with the stated objective of ensuring adequate protection of the health and legal rights of persons lodged in the prison.
