CHAKULIA – Water supply in Chakulia Nagar Panchayat area came to a standstill after pump operators and fitters launched a strike protesting unpaid wages and benefits.

The workers have not received their salaries for October and November 2023. Furthermore, their holiday compensation and provident fund dues remain pending. Meanwhile, residents faced severe water shortages across the municipal area.

Impact on Local Community

Local shopkeepers have stopped extending credit to the workers. Moreover, the strike has affected water supply from all five pump houses in the area. The situation has caused significant distress to thousands of residents dependent on municipal water supply.

Worker Demands

Arif Ansari, a pump operator, highlighted their financial struggles. “Our families are struggling to make ends meet,” said a protesting worker who wished to remain anonymous. In addition, the workers have declared to continue their strike until all dues are cleared.

Historical Context

JUSCO has faced similar protests in other areas previously. The company manages water supply operations in several municipalities across Jharkhand. Besides, worker unions have been demanding timely wage disbursement and better working conditions since 2022.
