RANCHI – Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on the death of Mangal Munda, the great-grandson of freedom fighter Birsa Munda, using the Santali Ol Chiki script in a rare gesture honoring tribal heritage.

Mangal Munda’s Struggle After Accident

Mangal Munda sustained severe head injuries in a road accident near Khunti a few days ago.

He was admitted to RIMS Ranchi, where a critical surgery was performed.

Despite medical interventions and placement on ventilator support, Munda passed away early Thursday morning at around 12:30 AM.

According to a local source, “His passing is a significant loss, not only for his family but also for the tribal community that cherishes Birsa Munda’s enduring legacy.”

Support from Political Leaders

Chief Minister Hemant Soren had personally instructed the Khunti administration to provide the best medical care possible.

Earlier on Thursday, Meera Munda, wife of former Chief Minister Arjun Munda, visited the hospital to check on Mangal Munda’s condition.

The tragic news was confirmed by his brother, Kanu Munda, through a Facebook post, which sparked an outpouring of grief.

Tribute to Birsa Munda’s Legacy

Mangal Munda’s death has been a poignant reminder of the legacy left by his great-grandfather, Birsa Munda, a revered tribal leader and freedom fighter.

PM Modi’s Santali message paid homage not only to Mangal Munda’s life but also to the enduring cultural and historical importance of the Munda family.

Roughly translated in Hindi, it says: “बिरसा मुंडा के वंशज मंगोल मुंडा के स्वर्गवास का समाचार बहुत दुखद है. इस तूफान ने उनके परिवार समेत झारखंड के आदिवासी समाज को काफी नुकसान पहुंचाया. ईश्वर इस दुख की घड़ी में परिवार को शक्ति दे।”

In English, it can roughly be translated as: “It is very sad to see the Mongol Munda, the descendant of Birsa Munda, among the gods. The storm caused a lot of damage to the tribal society of Jharkhand, including his family. May God give strength to the family in this time of sorrow.”
