Drought Concerns Dominate Jharkhand Assembly Session

Lawmakers Debate Agricultural Crisis as BJP Protests Disrupt Proceedings

Jharkhand Assembly’s monsoon session zeroes in on the state’s alarming drought situation, with only a fraction of paddy planted and limited irrigation coverage.

RANCHI – The fourth day of Jharkhand’s monsoon assembly session saw heated discussions on the state’s severe drought conditions, prompting government assurances of swift action.

MLA Pradeep Yadav sounded the alarm on the agricultural crisis, revealing that merely 10% of paddy has been sown and irrigation systems cover only a fifth of the fields.

"We must expand our irrigation network to pull our farmers out of economic hardship," Yadav urged his fellow legislators.

Agriculture Minister Deepika Pandey Singh responded to these concerns, announcing the department’s efforts to craft a contingency plan.

"We’re closely monitoring the situation and will submit a comprehensive drought report to the central government by late August," Singh stated.

She also highlighted a Rs 50 crore allocation for coarse grain cultivation in the upcoming fiscal year.

The session wasn’t without its share of drama as BJP MLAs staged a 35-minute protest in the well, forcing the Speaker to adjourn proceedings until the afternoon.

Water Resources Minister Champai Soren outlined plans to form a dedicated commission for boosting irrigation facilities.

"We’re developing a roadmap to supply water to fields via pipelines," Soren explained, addressing the irrigation shortfall.

The assembly also tackled issues beyond the drought crisis. MLA Shilpi Neha Tirkey raised concerns about the Abua Housing Scheme’s implementation.

In response, Rural Development Minister Irfan Ansari pledged to establish a committee, including the local DC and MLA, to address and rectify the scheme’s shortcomings.

As Jharkhand grapples with these pressing issues, the assembly’s deliberations underscore the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to the state’s agricultural and rural development challenges.
