CHAIBASA – A young child’s tragic demise due to malaria underscores the urgent need for improved healthcare in Saranda’s remote villages.
The recent death of a toddler has brought to light the severe healthcare crisis plaguing the villages of Saranda.
Suman Hansda, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl from Dharmargutu village, lost her life to malaria at Kiriburu Hospital on July 26th.
The child was admitted in critical condition, and despite doctors’ efforts, including a blood transfusion, she could not be saved.
"We did everything we could, but her condition was already too severe when she arrived," stated a hospital spokesperson.
This incident has highlighted the dire lack of medical facilities in the Chotanagra area.
Many villagers, faced with limited healthcare options, often turn to superstitious practices for treatment.
The absence of a regular doctor and ambulance service at Chotanagra hospital has long been a point of contention.
"We’ve been demanding basic medical services for years, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears," lamented a local community leader.
The malaria outbreak is not limited to civilians; even soldiers combating Naxalites in the region are affected.
Despite the recurring nature of this crisis during the rainy season, the health department appears ill-prepared to address it effectively.
"Every year we see deaths due to malaria, yet little seems to change," observed a frustrated resident.
The local Anwar Medical Store has become a primary source for essential medicines, underscoring the lack of formal healthcare infrastructure.
Issues with clean drinking water and inadequate ground-level work continue to exacerbate the problem.
"It’s clear that we need a complete overhaul of our public health management," urged a local health activist.
As malaria cases surge across Chotanagra’s villages, residents struggle to access necessary treatment.
