A century-old football tournament arrives in Jamshedpur, marking the city’s debut as a host. The event features aerial spectacles, cultural performances, and intense matches, showcasing local talent and seasoned teams.
JAMSHEDPUR – The Steel City prepares to host its first-ever Durand Cup match, blending sports with cultural festivities as the 133rd edition of the prestigious football tournament commences.
Jamshedpur FC, led by Coach Khalid Jamil, is set to clash with Assam Rifles Football Team in the tournament’s opening match.
The game will take place at the JRD Tata Sports Complex, starting at 4 PM IST.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren will inaugurate the event with a symbolic kick-off.
Spectators can anticipate a thrilling skydiving exhibition and an aircraft flyover by the Army Aviation Wing.
The match will be broadcast live on Sony Ten2 HD and streamed on the SonyLiv platform.
Coach Jamil emphasized the importance of not underestimating their opponents, despite the home advantage.
"We’re approaching this game with utmost seriousness," stated Jamil in a pre-match interview.
Assam Rifles, returning to the tournament after a hiatus, aims to challenge the more established teams in Group D.
In a parallel Group B fixture, Mohammedan Sporting will face debutants Inter Kashi at Kolkata’s Kishore Bharati Krirangan.
This match is scheduled for a 7 PM IST start.
Mohammedan SC, two-time Durand Cup champions, seeks to improve upon their previous performance and secure a spot in the knockout stages.
Inter Kashi FC, Uttar Pradesh’s first professional team, aims to make a strong impression in their debut Durand Cup appearance.
The tournament features 24 teams divided into six groups, with matches held across Kolkata, Jamshedpur, Kokrajhar, and Shillong.
Group winners and the two best second-placed teams will advance to the quarterfinals.
The Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football tournament, has been a launching pad for India’s top footballing talent since its inception in 1888.
Winners of the tournament receive three trophies: the Durand Cup, Shimla Trophy, and President’s Cup.
