Indian Teen Climber Kaamya Karthikeyan Now Aims for Antarctica’s Highest Peak, Vinson Massif

Tata Steel Commends Young Mountaineer Kaamya Karthikeyan for Everest Achievement

Tata Steel celebrated Kaamya Karthikeyan’s remarkable feat of scaling Mount Everest, making her the youngest Indian woman to achieve this milestone.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel today honored 16-year-old Kaamya Karthikeyan for her historic ascent of Mount Everest on May 20.

Kaamya’s climb was supported by the Tata Steel Adventure Foundation (TSAF).

Her next goal is to reach the summit of Mount Vinson Massif in Antarctica in December.

Kaamya is determined to complete the "Grand Slam Explorer" challenge, which involves climbing the highest peaks on all seven continents and skiing to both the North and South Poles.

Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President of Corporate Services at Tata Steel, praised Kaamya’s exceptional accomplishment at an event held at JFC Lounge in JRD Tata Sports Complex.

Kaamya’s father, Commander S Karthikeyan of the Indian Navy, also reached Everest’s summit shortly after his daughter.

Kaamya described the difficulties she faced on Everest, including severe weather and low visibility near the peak.

She mentioned that the toughest part of the climb was the section from Camp 3 to Camp 4.

After reaching the summit, Kaamya’s first call was to her mother, Lavanya, who expressed immense joy.

Kaamya’s thorough preparation, including acclimatization rotations and climbing Mt. Lobuche, was crucial to her success.

Her father, Commander Karthikeyan, expressed pride in her achievement and noted her long-time dream to climb Everest since she was seven years old.

TSAF’s support, both financial and through extensive training, was essential in Kaamya’s journey.

Kaamya also shared that the base camp provided excellent facilities, with full support from the Sherpas.

Living in Mumbai, Kaamya maintains a rigorous training schedule by climbing the stairs of her 20-story building multiple times daily.

Her diverse talents and unwavering determination make her a role model for young girls aspiring to achieve their dreams.

Kaamya’s story demonstrates the power of passion, commitment, and support in reaching extraordinary goals.
