CHAIBASA – The Chaibasa court has sentenced five youths to life imprisonment for the gang rape of a software engineer.
The incident occurred near Chaibasa Aerodrome on October 20, 2022.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on each of the five convicts.
The convicted youths are all majors.
The case involving four minor accused is still pending before the Juvenile Justice Board.
The victim, a resident of Jhinkpani police station area, was working from home in Chaibasa at the time of the incident.
On the day of the attack, she had gone to Tekrahatu airstrip with a friend on a scooty.
A group of 8-10 youths intimidated her friend, drove him away, and then took the girl to a deserted area where they gang-raped her.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and raised questions about government and police security measures.
Following the uproar, the police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and arrested a total of nine youths, including the four minors.
The SIT collected evidence in a scientific manner, leading to the conviction and sentencing of the five accused to life imprisonment.
The case continues to draw attention as the proceedings for the minor accused are still underway.
