Football Training Empowers Girls in Potka to Challenge Gender Norms
Youth Organization Launches Sports Initiative to Combat Child Marriage
In Potka block, a unique initiative uses football to empower girls and challenge entrenched gender stereotypes, as part of a broader campaign against early marriage.
JAMSHEDPUR – In Potka block, a unique initiative uses football to empower girls and challenge entrenched gender stereotypes, as part of a broader campaign against early marriage.
Under the Youth Unity for Voluntary Action (Yuva) and the Girls First Fund program, football training was conducted at Jahatu football ground, engaging girls from the local Hensalbil Panchayat.
The program, led by young coach Urmila Bhumij, aims to provide these girls not only with sports skills but also with a platform to defy societal norms that restrict their freedom.
By participating in what is traditionally seen as a "boys’ game," these girls are making a statement against the conservative views that label them as weak or suggest that freedom leads to moral decline.
The daily football practice is more than just physical training; it’s a transformative tool that helps these young women develop leadership qualities and establish their identities within their communities.
Youth workers Jyoti Hembram, Kiran Sardar, Abanti Sardar, and Chandrakala Munda have also played crucial roles in facilitating this empowering initiative.
