Congress Leader Welcomes Supreme Court’s Striking Down Electoral Bonds

Verdict hailed as a win for transparency in India’s political funding

The Supreme Court’s ruling against electoral bonds sparks a debate on democracy and transparency, with Congress hailing the decision as a victory.

JAMSHEDPUR – In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court ruled electoral bonds illegal, banning their use, a move applauded by Parvinder Singh, State General Secretary of the Congress party, as a triumph for democratic accountability and transparency.

Singh underscored the importance of transparency for democracy, framing the court’s decision as crucial for preserving the nation’s democratic fabric.

He voiced concerns over the threat posed to the Constitution by the current administration, positing the Supreme Court as the last bastion of hope against potential overreach by Narendra Modi and the BJP.

Electoral bonds, introduced by the Central Government in 2017, have been a major funding source for political parties, accounting for 60% of their financial support.

The scheme has funneled 92,000 crore rupees into political donations, with the BJP receiving a disproportionate share of 53,00 crore rupees.

The BJP’s defense of the electoral bond scheme, arguing against the public’s right to information on political donations, was met with criticism for attempting to obscure financial dealings.

Today’s Supreme Court ruling marks a pivotal moment for political funding transparency in India, addressing longstanding concerns over potential abuses of power and financial misconduct.
