Court Convicts 10 in 2019 Tabrez Ansari Lynching Case, Sentences to 10 Years

In the infamous 2019 lynching case of Tabrez Ansari in Seraikela district, the court of ADJ-1 Amit Shekhar found all ten surviving accused guilty. Each has been sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment and fined Rs 17,500.

SERAIKELA – In a significant development, the court of Seraikela District and Sessions Judge Amit Shekhar has convicted ten individuals in connection with the 2019 lynching of Tabrez Ansari.

The accused have been sentenced to ten years in prison and fined Rs 17,500 each.

The Conviction and Sentence

PP Praveen Kumar Singh said the court’s ruling covered various charges, including three years imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5,000 under section 325; one year’s imprisonment and a Rs 300 fine under section 341; nine months’ imprisonment and an Rs 800 fine under section 323; one year’s imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 under section 295 A; and one year’s imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1,000 under section 147. All sentences are set to run concurrently.

The Accused and the Incident

The accused, who were convicted primarily under section 304 of the IPC, include Prakash Mandal alias Pappu Mandal, Bhim Singh Munda, Sunamo Pradhan, Atul Mahali, Vikram Mandal, Chamu Nayak, Prem Chandra Mahali, Kamal Mahto, Madan Nayak, and Mahesh Mahali.

The case dates back to June 18, 2019, when Ansari was severely beaten by a mob in Dhatkidih village under the allegation of attempted theft.

He was later handed over to the police and sent to judicial custody following a medical examination.

His health deteriorated rapidly, and he was admitted to Sadar Hospital on June 21, where he died during treatment the next day.

After the ruling, Ansari’s widow Shahista Parveen expressed dissatisfaction with the judgment and indicated her intention to challenge the decision in a higher court.
