Key Points:

- Mason working on structure also injured, rushed to Jamua hospital
- Hirodih police recover bodies, launch probe into structural failure
GIRIDIH – A mother and her son were killed on the spot after the chhajja of an under-construction house collapsed on them in Giridih district.
The incident occurred in Salaiya village under the Hirodih police station area. The tragedy plunged the entire locality into mourning.
The deceased have been identified as Sunita Devi and her son, Rajkumar Yadav. They were reportedly overseeing construction work on their own house at the time.
Both were standing near the chhajja, instructing mason Pradeep Yadav on the ongoing work. However, the structure suddenly gave way with a loud crash.
The debris fell directly on Sunita Devi and Rajkumar Yadav, burying them instantly. Pradeep Yadav, who was working atop the chhajja, also fell and sustained serious injuries.
Villagers rushed to launch rescue efforts as soon as the structure collapsed. After considerable effort, the mother and son were pulled out from under the debris.
By then, however, both had already died. Family members were left inconsolable, while a pall of gloom descended over the village.
Pradeep Yadav was rushed to a hospital in Jamua for immediate treatment. Doctors said he suffered injuries to his hands, legs and other parts of his body.
Meanwhile, the true extent of his injuries will only be known once X-ray and other test reports arrive. Hirodih police reached the spot after being alerted and inspected the site.
Officers took both bodies into custody and sent them for post-mortem examination. An investigation into the cause of the collapse has also been launched.
Initial suspicion points to the chhajja not being sufficiently strong or a possible technical flaw in construction. The exact cause, however, will be confirmed only after the investigation concludes.
The tragedy has left Salaiya village in shock. Villagers have demanded that safety standards be strictly enforced at construction sites in future to prevent similar accidents.
Such incidents involving structural collapses have been reported elsewhere in the state in the past.
