JAMSHEDPUR – A 22-year-old man drowned at Dimna Dam on Friday morning in a tragic accident. The deceased was identified as Ayush Kumar, a resident of Kaglanagar in Sonari.
The incident plunged his family into mourning. Relatives who reached the postmortem house were seen weeping inconsolably, witnesses said.
According to available information, Kumar had gone to Dimna Dam with his younger brother, Piyush. The two brothers later went into the water to bathe.
However, Kumar suddenly drifted toward deeper water. He lost his balance and began to drown.
His younger brother tried hard to save him. Despite the effort, he could not pull Kumar to safety.
Bystanders in the area alerted the police as soon as they learned of the incident. On information, Bodam police station personnel reached the spot without delay.
With help from local residents, police pulled the young man out of the water after considerable effort. By then, however, he had already died.
Police took custody of the body and sent it to MGM Medical College Hospital for postmortem. Kumar reportedly worked at a private company and played a key role in supporting his family financially.
Meanwhile, his mother and younger brother broke down at the postmortem house. Their cries left onlookers moved, according to those present.
Bodam police said a case of unnatural death has been registered. Further legal proceedings in the matter are underway, officers said.
“People should exercise full caution while bathing in dams, rivers and other water bodies, and avoid venturing into deep water,” a police officer said.
The drowning comes weeks after a youth from Sonari went missing after drowning in the Swarnarekha river at Chandil. Similarly, two teenagers drowned at a check dam in Seraikela earlier this month.
Besides, the NDRF had conducted rescue training at Dimna Lake last month. In addition, a worker had earlier died of electrocution while laying a pipeline in the Dimna area.
