Tata Steel Employees Raise Concerns Over Future of Medical Extension Benefits

Uncertainty looms over medical extension benefits for Tata Steel employees as the current agreement approaches its expiration on May 31.

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel employees are expressing uncertainty over the financial benefits linked to the medical extension agreement set to expire on May 31.

While union leadership has approached management seeking a review of the agreement, the future remains unclear, sparking discussions among employees.

Before May 2018, Tata Steel granted a one-year medical extension to employees aged 60 and over based on health considerations.

However, this practice was later discontinued.

After significant pressure from workers, union leadership engaged in dialogue with management, culminating in an agreement on May 26, 2018.

As per this agreement, retired employees would receive a total of Rs 7.20 lakh over five years, based on a minimum wage of Rs 60,000.

As the term of this agreement nears its end, employees retiring from June 1 are left wondering whether they will receive these benefits.

Union leaders have reassured that there will be no discontinuation of the scheme as the agreement itself mandates a review after five years.

However, concerns persist about potential changes to the terms of the agreement.
