Gram Sabha in Manpita village voices opposition against land transfer for the construction of a Heavy Motors Vehicle Training Center.

Jamshedpur – A large Gram Sabha was organized in the Manpita revenue village today, presided over by village head Ramcharan Karmakar.

The gathering, which took place on Sunday, 21/05/2023, saw participation from representatives of 64 Gram Sabhas, including Majhi Baba, Munda, Gram Pradhan, and Torp Pargana, along with social activists from all across Kolhan.

Krishna Lohar was the moderator for the event.

The primary topic of discussion was the opposition to the East Singhbhum District Administration’s transfer of land to the Transport Department for the construction of a Heavy Motors Vehicle Training Center in Manpita village, executed without consulting the Gram Sabha.

Kumar Chandra Mardi, one of the speakers, questioned why a notification wasn’t issued through the gazette following the formation of PESA rules and the approval by the TAC.

He urged tribal legislators and ministers to take notice.

He emphasized that any land within the Gram Sabha’s jurisdiction in the Fifth Schedule area couldn’t be transferred to any department without the Gram Sabha’s consent.

Baba Haripdo Murmu, Asanbani Torap Pargana, voiced solidarity with Manpita Gram Sabha.

He added that if the mother power comes forward, no one would have the courage to establish a heavy vehicle motor center in Manpita.

The Grand Gram Sabha concluded with several resolutions, including opposition to the Heavy Motors Vehicle Training Center, a collective fight against the proposed training center, cancellation of the land bank policy, repeal of the Land Acquisition Amendment Act 2018, a massive protest demonstration at the Deputy Commissioner’s office on May 25, 2023, submission of a memorandum to the local MLA on May 24, 2023, and a meeting with the Chief Minister on this matter on May 23, 2023.
