Tata Group Announces Plans for a £4 Billion Battery Gigafactory in the UK

Tata Sons’ £4 billion investment in a UK gigafactory, starting production in 2026, signifies a significant move towards electric mobility and renewable energy storage.

DESK – Tata Sons, on July 19, 2023, unveiled its ambition to establish a 40GW battery cell gigafactory in the UK, marking a significant contribution to the nation’s green tech ecosystem.

The nearly £4 billion investment is expected to be a cornerstone in providing electric mobility and renewable energy storage solutions in the UK and Europe.

Set to start production in 2026, the gigafactory will mainly serve JLR and Tata Motors.

N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, expressed his excitement about the upcoming project, emphasizing the Tata Group’s dedication to a sustainable future across all their businesses. He appreciated the collaboration with the UK Government, which has been instrumental in making the venture possible.

The UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, welcomed Tata Group’s decision, interpreting it as a significant endorsement of Britain’s economy and a monumental investment in the UK automotive industry.

The gigafactory aims to produce high-quality, eco-friendly battery cells and packs for various applications in energy and mobility sectors. During its initial stage, it will use as much renewable energy as possible, with a long-term goal of transitioning to 100% clean energy. Embracing a circular economic environment, the facility will utilize advanced technology and resource-saving methods such as battery recycling.
