JAMSHEDPUR – More than 22 shops were demolished near Tatanagar station as rail authorities began clearing encroachments for a major redevelopment and expansion project.
The eviction drive was conducted near Tatanagar railway station in Jamshedpur. It covered areas in Kithadih and Golpahari located adjacent to railway land.
Meanwhile, officials said the action targeted illegal structures. The move aims to accelerate the station’s redevelopment work.
However, authorities stated that the step would improve passenger facilities. It is also expected to ease persistent traffic congestion near the station.
During the operation, over 22 shops were demolished. Railway sources said around 22 to 25 structures were identified for removal.
Moreover, elaborate security arrangements were made at the site. Personnel from Bagbera police station and the Railway Protection Force were deployed.
Meanwhile, shopkeepers began removing their belongings early in the morning. Officials supervised the clearance throughout the day.
Upendra Singh from the railway land department confirmed the action. He said the demolition was part of the Tatanagar station development project.
However, he stated that the drive followed court directives. “We are complying with judicial orders and clearing encroachments accordingly,” an official said.
In contrast, railway authorities have faced resistance in earlier drives. Previously, an encroachment removal near Khasmahal triggered protests.
Moreover, the railway had issued eviction notices in Jharkhand Nagar earlier this year. Senior officials have also reviewed similar actions during inspections.
Meanwhile, railway authorities said the upgraded station will feature modern amenities. They added that redevelopment will enhance commuter experience in the coming years.
