CHAIBASA – Police have detained three men for killing a para teacher near Purnapani after a liquor dispute.

The police said that the attack occurred on November 29 near a local market site. However, the assailants had fled into nearby forests after the incident.

Investigators stated that the victim, Mukru Devgam, had worked as a para teacher in Sundi Surnia. He had visited the weekly market at Purnapani when the confrontation unfolded.

Meanwhile, police said the dispute erupted during a Hadiya or Rasi drinking session. The quarrel escalated quickly after heated arguments.

In addition, officers revealed that the attackers used stones and sticks to kill him. They later abandoned key items near the crime spot.

A team led by the Jagannathpur Subdivisional Police Officer launched a search operation. However, the accused kept moving through dense forest areas after the killing.

The team used technical tracking support during the operation. Moreover, they traced the suspects to Kejra village on November 30.

Police arrested the three linked suspects: Soma Sundi, Sinu Gaur and Mangal Karowa. They were detained after officers verified their involvement in the assault.

A police source said the suspects confessed during questioning. “They admitted their role during the inquiry,” the source said.

Besides this, police recovered bloodstained clothing of the accused from the site. Officers also seized a stone carrying visible blood traces.

Further details emerged during the investigation about the sequence of events. However, officers confirmed no other individuals were involved.

Police noted that the same region has witnessed earlier crimes, including a Chaibasa assault case. Moreover, past killings in the district include a murder linked to property disputes.

To provide context, Chaibasa police had earlier handled a couple case involving similar rural tensions. In addition, officers previously investigated female naxals after a 2018 killing. Another recent case involved a Lipunga murder in the district. Meanwhile, investigators had also probed Bihar hawkers killed in the region. Police also reviewed records from a witchcraft case tied to local beliefs.
