HAZARIBAGH – Four girls from one family drowned in a pond at Jhardaga village in Hazaribagh district on Tuesday afternoon.
The tragedy occurred in Shahpur panchayat under Katakamsandi police station. The girls had gone to wash clothes. This happened after completing Chhath Puja rituals.
One girl slipped into deep water first. Her relatives attempted rescue operations immediately. However, all four drowned in succession.
The deceased include Rinki Kumari, aged 16 years. Her father is Mukesh Kumar from the village. Pooja Kumari was 20 years old.
Pooja’s father Raju Saw lives in Barkagaon Sikri. She was visiting her maternal grandmother’s house. Sakshi Kumar was 16 years old.
Her father Premchand Prasad resides in Jhardaga. Riya Kumari was the youngest at 14. She was Mukesh Kumar’s daughter too.
The incident happened around afternoon hours on Tuesday. Family members discovered the bodies shortly after. Local residents rushed to the spot immediately.
Police reached the location following information about deaths. Bodies were sent for post-mortem examination. The family members are inconsolable over the loss.
Grief has engulfed the entire village community. Moreover, mourning spread across Hazaribagh district rapidly. The administration expressed condolences to bereaved families.
Villagers described the pond as dangerously deep. In addition, no safety measures exist around it. Local sources said such tragedies occur occasionally.
The girls belonged to close-knit family members. Three were sisters while one was cousin. Furthermore, they had celebrated Chhath together hours before.
