JAMSHEDPUR – Tensions rose on Sunday as police detained several leaders and supporters heading towards Nagri in Ranchi for the ‘Hal Joto’ campaign against land acquisition for the RIMS-2 project.
Babulal Soren, son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren and a former BJP candidate from Ghatshila, was detained by police in Tamara. In Saraikela, Zilla Parishad chairman Sonaram Bodra was also taken into custody at Kandra police station.
Convoys of protestors from Jamshedpur, Saraikela, and other districts were intercepted and prevented from reaching Nagri. Statewide, police blocked groups attempting to join the agitation.
Authorities have barricaded the proposed site in Nagri and deployed a heavy police force to ensure no protesters gather. Farmers and tribal groups had planned to plough the land in symbolic opposition to the project.
The detentions mark an escalation in the standoff, with police prioritizing security to prevent unrest in the state capital.
