Grief over Shibu Soren’s death marks sombre tribute event in Jamshedpur
Key Points:
- Leaders pay homage at Chamaria guest house and Uliyan memorial site
- Mood sombre due to recent death of movement icon Shibu Soren
- Vow renewed to build the Jharkhand envisioned by Mahato and Soren
JAMSHEDPUR – Jharkhand mourned and remembered two of its greatest heroes on Friday.
Large numbers gathered to honour martyr Nirmal Mahato on his 38th death anniversary in Jamshedpur. Tributes poured in at Chamaria Guest House in Bistupur and his memorial site in Uliyan, Kadma.
However, this year’s homage was marked by a tone of sorrow due to the recent demise of Dishom Guru and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren.
Nirmal Mahato and Shibu Soren are hailed as the chief architects of the Jharkhand movement. Their vision and struggle laid the foundation for the formation of a separate Jharkhand state.
It was on this very day in 1987 that Nirmal Mahato was assassinated in front of Chamaria Guest House. His death had sparked a surge in the movement for statehood.
Soon after, the demand for a separate Jharkhand gained unprecedented momentum, eventually leading to the state’s creation in 2000.
Following Shibu Soren’s recent death, the loss of two legendary movement leaders cast a shadow over this year’s observance.
The tribute this year was conducted with simplicity and deep emotion. Leaders, supporters, and family members gathered quietly to pay respects.
Present at the memorial were Ichagarh MLA and family member Savita Mahato, JMM state spokesperson Mohan Karmakar, former MP Shailendra Mahato, and activist Suryya Singh Besra.
All attendees pledged to work towards the vision that Nirmal Mahato and Shibu Soren had dreamt for Jharkhand.
One leader said, “Their sacrifice gave us this state. Now it is our duty to shape it in their image.”
The event reminded citizens of the sacrifices made for Jharkhand’s formation and the long journey from struggle to statehood.
