SERAIKELA – A six-year-old girl, Sushmita Mahato, sustained serious burn injuries while warming herself near a fire in Chimtiya village of Saraikela’s Ichagarh block. She is currently under treatment at MGM Hospital.

The incident happened around 4 PM on Thursday. Sushmita, along with other children, was warming herself by a straw fire. Suddenly, her woolen clothes caught fire, leading to burns from her waist up. Frightened, the other children fled the scene, leaving her in distress.

Her grandmother revealed that the girl had been staying at her maternal grandparents’ home for a month. Sushmita’s paternal home is in Hudumda village, under the Bagmundi police station in West Bengal. Her father, Fakir Mahato, was not present at the time.

Prompt action was taken by her family, who rushed her to MGM Hospital for advanced medical care. A relative stated, “We are hopeful she will recover soon as doctors are actively monitoring her condition.”

Such incidents highlight the dangers of unsupervised fires, especially during winter months when open fires are common in rural areas.
