Key Points:
– Raja Peter files nomination as JD(U) candidate for Tamar.
– He rejoined JD(U) ahead of the 2024 Jharkhand polls.
– His legal battles behind, Peter looks to regain Tamar seat.
RANCHI – Gopal Krishna Patar, better known as Raja Peter, has officially filed his nomination for the Tamar Assembly seat, representing the Janata Dal (United).
Peter’s candidacy comes as no surprise, given his previous victory in the same seat during the 2009 bypolls, where he famously defeated former Jharkhand Chief Minister, Shibu Soren.
This time, Peter rejoined JD(U) in late September 2024, marking his return to active politics after a five-year legal battle that once threatened to sideline him permanently.
Peter’s return to JD(U) was highly anticipated, with the party seeing his candidacy as a strategic advantage for the upcoming Jharkhand elections.
JD(U) leadership has expressed strong confidence in Peter’s influence within Tamar, a constituency where his local connections and previous tenure hold significant weight.
His supporters have remained loyal throughout his political journey, including during his arrest in 2017 by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the murder of Ramesh Singh Munda.
However, in December 2023, the Jharkhand High Court granted Peter bail, allowing him to return to public life.
"Raja Peter’s return strengthens our campaign efforts. His influence in Tamar is unparalleled, and we believe his victory is crucial for JD(U)’s growth in Jharkhand," said a JD(U) strategist.
After filing his nomination, Peter addressed a crowd of his supporters, emphasizing his dedication to the Tamar constituency.
"I am grateful for the continued support of the people. My goal is to serve Tamar with the same passion as I did before," he stated.
His return has sparked hope within JD(U) that Tamar can once again be a winning seat in their 2024 election strategy.
With JD(U) eyeing several key seats in Jharkhand, Peter’s nomination is seen as a pivotal element in their bid to expand influence.
