Transgender Appointed as Community Health Officer in Jharkhand

Amir Mahto becomes state’s first transgender to lead a health centre

In a groundbreaking move, Jharkhand appoints its first transgender community health officer, Amir Mahto.

RANCHI – Amir Mahto, a transgender from Manoharpur, has been appointed as Jharkhand’s first transgender community health officer.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren presented Mahto with the appointment letter at a ceremony in Ranchi on Thursday.

Mahto, who holds an MSc in Nursing from Sambalpur Nursing College, expressed surprise and joy at the appointment.

"I know the struggles of a transgender, but I’m happy to fulfill my mother’s dream of me becoming a nurse," Mahto stated.

The newly appointed health officer assured equal treatment for all patients, regardless of gender.

Mahto’s appointment is part of a larger initiative to address healthcare challenges in Jharkhand.

The state government distributed appointment letters to 365 community health officers during the event.

Chief Minister Soren announced plans to involve private doctors in state-run hospitals lacking specialists.

"We’re working to enhance health infrastructure so residents don’t need treatment in other states," Soren said.

State Health Secretary Ajoy Kumar Singh revealed that private doctors will receive incentives for their services.

The government has also launched schemes to improve cleanliness and maintenance in health facilities.

An annual budget of Rs 5 crore has been allocated for these initiatives across various healthcare levels.

Soren highlighted ongoing recruitment efforts in the health sector to boost manpower.

"Thousands of recruitments are underway, despite criticism from some quarters," the Chief Minister noted.

This appointment marks a significant step towards inclusivity and addressing healthcare needs in Jharkhand.
