Steel Giant Aims to Double Domestic Capacity While Focusing on Sustainability

JAMSHEDPUR – Tata Steel announced plans to double its manufacturing capacity in India to approximately 40 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), signaling a major shift in its global production strategy.
The steel behemoth aims to increase its India-manufactured steel share to over 75%, up from the current 62%, through expansions in Jamshedpur, Gamharia, Kalinganagar, and Meramandali.
Tata Steel’s global capacity of 35 MTPA will see a significant boost, with a strong focus on sustainability and achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2045.
The company plans substantial investments in low-CO2 steelmaking technologies, including major initiatives in the UK and Netherlands, contingent on government support.
Chairman N Chandrasekaran addressed the modernization of the Port Talbot plant in the UK, which may result in 2,500 job losses due to the shift to a low-emission electric arc furnace process.
Tata Steel has committed to working closely with the UK government and unions to support affected workers through skill development programs.
The Port Talbot project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 5 million tonnes annually while maintaining steelmaking operations and safeguarding a majority of jobs.
This expansion strategy reaffirms Tata Steel’s vision to become one of the world’s most respected and valuable steel companies.
