Wild Elephants Damage Temple, Disrupt Life in Chakulia

Herd of 25 Pachyderms Roam Near Airstrip, Causing Concern Among Residents

Repeated incidents of elephant intrusion spark fear and call for wildlife management measures.

CHAKULIA – The Naga Baba Mandir near Chakulia’s airstrip area faced another elephant attack, with a wild pachyderm breaking through the temple’s wall and gate overnight.

This incident marks a recurring problem, as the temple’s wall had previously suffered similar damage from elephant intrusions.

"It’s disheartening to see our sacred space repeatedly damaged," a local worshipper commented. "We need a long-term solution to protect both the temple and the elephants."

Escalating Wildlife Conflict

Approximately 25 wild elephants are currently roaming the airstrip vicinity.

The herd has been venturing into the market area during evenings, causing destruction.

Residents of Naya Bazar in Nagar Panchayat report significant disruptions to daily life.

Community Impact

Fear of elephant encounters has led many to avoid leaving their homes after dark.

"We feel trapped in our own neighborhood," a concerned resident stated. "Our safety is at risk, but we also understand these are wild animals in unfamiliar territory."

Local authorities face the challenge of balancing wildlife conservation with community safety.

Experts suggest implementing better elephant corridors and awareness programs to mitigate human-elephant conflicts.

This situation highlights the growing issue of habitat encroachment and the need for sustainable coexistence between humans and wildlife in the region.
