SERAIKELA – A herd of wild elephants caused extensive damage in Kumhari Vangoda village of Nimdih police station area, Saraikela district, on Tuesday night.
The elephants destroyed the houses of Bhushan Mahato and Nipen Mahato, consuming stored grains in the process.
Following the structural damage, an electrical short circuit ignited a fire that spread to nearby homes.
"We lost everything – money, goats, chickens, and rice – in the blaze," lamented a distraught villager who wished to remain anonymous.
Residents promptly informed the Chandil Range Forest Department and Ichagarh MLA Sabita Mahato about the incident.
MLA Mahato has urged forest officials to provide compensation to the affected families.
"We’re working to ensure all possible assistance from the forest department and government reaches the victims," the MLA stated.
Forest department officials are assessing the damage to determine appropriate compensation measures.
This incident highlights the ongoing human-elephant conflict in the region, raising concerns about wildlife management and rural safety.
Local authorities are exploring strategies to mitigate such conflicts and protect both villagers and wildlife.
