Congress Gears Up to Contest 33 Seats in Jharkhand Assembly Elections

Party ramps up preparations, aims to strengthen position in upcoming elections.

The Congress party’s Jharkhand unit is gearing up to contest 33 out of 81 seats in the upcoming assembly elections later this year.

RANCHI – The Congress party has intensified its preparations to contest 33 seats in the Jharkhand assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

A senior party leader confirmed this on Tuesday.

In the 2019 assembly elections, Congress contested 31 seats in alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

Ghulam Ahmed Mir, Congress’ Jharkhand in-charge, stated, “We contested 31 seats in the last assembly elections. Since then, two more MLAs have joined us, bringing our total to 33 seats. We have begun preparations for these seats.”

He added that the final number of seats Congress will contest will be determined by the seat-sharing agreement.

Mir visited former Chief Minister Hemant Soren at Birsa Munda Central Jail in Ranchi.

He also held detailed discussions with the party high command in Delhi on Monday regarding the Jharkhand assembly elections.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party president Rahul Gandhi, and general secretary (organization) KC Venugopal provided strategic suggestions to strengthen the party’s organization in Jharkhand and aim for maximum seats in the upcoming elections.

The Jharkhand assembly elections are set to take place alongside elections in Maharashtra and Haryana later this year.

The term of the Jharkhand Assembly will conclude on January 5, 2025.
