Seraikela Gamharia Degree College Land Dispute Erupts in Burudih
Gram Sabha meeting turns violent as locals clash over government’s land acquisition plans
Controversy highlights challenges in balancing development with traditional land rights.
GAMHARIA – A Gram Sabha meeting in Burudih, Gamharia block of Saraikela-Kharsawan district, descended into chaos on Sunday over the proposed construction of a degree college.
The Jharkhand government has approved the acquisition of 15.20 acres of uncultivated land for the college project.
Chief Minister Champai Soren had announced the college as a gift to local youth, 23 years after Jharkhand’s formation.
Some villagers oppose the project, claiming the land acquisition lacks proper Gram Sabha consent.
Protesters argue that the designated land is tribal territory and accuse the government of attempted eviction.
The Gram Sabha meeting saw physical confrontations between supporters and opponents of the college project.
One faction advocates for the college’s construction, while the other views it as an insult to the Gram Sabha’s authority.
The Circle Officer stated that all land parcels in question belong to the Jharkhand government, not individual residents.
Officials assured that no residential structures would be demolished for the project.
The Gram Sabha proceeded under the supervision of local officials, with attendees signing a register.
This incident underscores the complex issues surrounding land acquisition for development projects in tribal areas.
The controversy raises questions about the balance between progress and preserving traditional land rights.
