Abhishek Patnaik, a resident of Sonari West Layout, Jamshedpur, lost Rs 13 lakh to cyber criminals impersonating Mumbai police officers.
JAMSHEDPUR – Abhishek Patnaik, a resident of Sonari West Layout, Jamshedpur, has filed an FIR at Bistupur Cyber Police Station after being defrauded of Rs 13 lakh by cyber thugs.
Patnaik received a call from 9693264486, where the caller claimed to be a Sub-Inspector from Tilak Nagar Police Station in Mumbai.
The caller threatened Patnaik, stating that his Canara Bank account in Mumbai was linked to a money laundering operation involving Naresh Goyal.
To further intimidate him, the cyber criminals sent an arrest warrant purportedly issued by the Supreme Court Authority, along with an FIR application.
They instructed Patnaik to transfer the money via RTGS to settle the issue.
In response, Patnaik transferred the amount through Punjab National Bank’s Bistupur branch to an SBI account in the name of Pradeep Service Eversign at the Mumbai branch on May 29.
The fraudsters continued to communicate with Patnaik through WhatsApp, demanding an additional three lakh rupees to resolve the matter completely.
Realizing the deception, Patnaik consulted his friends and subsequently lodged an FIR with the cyber police.
Jamshedpur cyber police Station is looking into the case. A police source commented, "We are investigating the case and urge citizens to be cautious of such fraudulent calls."
