Tata Steel Commemorates 169th Birth Anniversary of Pioneering Geologist P N Bose
D B Sundara Ramam and Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary Grace Occasion as Chief Guests
Tata Steel paid rich tributes to the trailblazing geologist Pramatha Nath Bose, affectionately known as P N Bose, on his 169th birth anniversary today.
JAMSHEDPUR – On May 12, 2024, Tata Steel celebrated the remarkable legacy of P N Bose, a pioneering geologist whose discoveries laid the foundation for India’s first integrated steel plant.
The commemoration, organized by the Natural Resources Division (NRD) in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence, was graced by the presence of D B Sundara Ramam, Vice-President Raw Materials Tata Steel, as the Chief Guest, and Sanjeev Kumar Choudhary, President, Tata Workers’ Union, as the Guest of Honour.
The day began with a solemn homage ceremony near Armoury Ground, where senior management and employees of Tata Steel gathered to pay their respects to P N Bose.
The tribute extended digitally, allowing Tata Steel employees across all locations to join in the remembrance.
Chanakya Chaudhary, Vice President Corporate Services, Atrayee Sanyal, Vice President Human Resources Management, Shailesh Kumar Singh, Deputy President, Tata Workers’ Union, Satish Kumar Singh, General Secretary, Tata Workers’ Union, and other dignitaries from NRD and Tata Steel were also present during the ceremony.
In his address, D B Sundara Ramam emphasized P N Bose’s pivotal role in paving the way for a self-reliant India in the realms of mines and metals.
He attributed the birth of India’s first integrated steel plant to Bose’s foresightedness and groundbreaking discoveries.
The commemorative events continued with the P N Bose Memorial Lecture at the Centre for Excellence, featuring Pradipta Tarafdar, Deputy Director General (Retired) Geological Survey of India, as the guest speaker.
The lecture, titled "Discussion on Iron Ore and Critical Minerals scenario of India," drew an audience of over 60 individuals from NRD.
The evening saw a knowledge-sharing session at the P N Bose Geological Centre, focusing on the application of geophysics in mineral exploration and the use of drones in digital mine mapping and monitoring.
P N Bose’s remarkable achievements include being the first Indian graduate in science from a British University, discovering petroleum in Assam, setting up India’s first soap factory, and introducing micro sections in petrological work.
His letter to J N Tata on February 24, 1904, following the discovery of iron ore deposits in Gorumahisani, catalyzed the establishment of Tata Iron and Steel Company at Sakchi on August 26, 1907.
Bose’s unwavering advocacy for technical education in India led to the foundation of the Bengal Technical Institute, now known as Jadavpur University, where he served as the first honorary Principal.
