Surpriyo Bhattacharya Challenges Modi on Local Issues Before His Jharkhand Visit

JMM Official Questions PM Modi’s Policies, Demands Clear Stance on Tribal Rights

Supriyo Bhattacharya, during a press briefing at the JMM headquarters, greeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Jharkhand with a demand for clear answers on specific regional issues, distancing the conversation from broader national debates.

RANCHI – Bhattacharya refocused the dialogue on critical local concerns, requesting Modi to address his position on the Sarna Dharma code, which is central to tribal identity in Jharkhand.

He pushed for a definitive stance from the Prime Minister regarding his support for this tribal code.

Environmental and Legal Amendments

He also interrogated the Prime Minister about changes to the Forest Rights Act, highlighting the implications of Adani Group’s activities in Chhattisgarh on Jharkhand’s tribal areas. Bhattacharya expressed apprehensions about the weakening of local tribal governance and its potential effects on tribal lands.

Industrial Concerns and Economic Policies

Furthermore, Bhattacharya drew attention to recent amendments in the Coal Warehousing Act, suggesting they might favor external investors at the expense of the local demographic and environment.

He posited that these legislative changes could facilitate exploitation by external entities.

Bhattacharya concluded by addressing the decline of the Heavy Engineering Corporation, once a leading industry in Asia, urging Modi to clarify future governmental plans for this entity and discuss its ongoing deterioration.

Cultural and Political Resilience

In Ranchi, Bhattacharya reinforced the idea that Jharkhand’s people, proud descendants of warriors, would not be intimidated by political tactics. He highlighted the ongoing commitment to justice and equity, resisting what he described as attempts to undermine their resolve through political pressure.

He criticized the BJP for their handling of electoral logistics, pointing out issues with campaign arrangements and the designation of star campaigners due to unresolved legal proceedings.

The case of Hemant Soren and the pending status of Chamra Linda as a candidate underscored the complex interplay of legal and procedural hurdles facing the party.
