Renowned Jurist Dr. BR Sarangi Set to Take Helm at Jharkhand High Court

Dr. BR Sarangi’s elevation as Jharkhand High Court’s Chief Justice will highlight his extensive legal and judicial experience.

RANCHI – Dr. B.R. Sarangi, a distinguished figure in the legal fraternity, has been recommended to be appointed as the new Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

The Supreme Court Collegium has said in its recommendation: “As regards his contribution to the judiciary by way of disposal of cases, during his tenure of over 12 years as a Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, he has authored more than 499 reported judgments. He has acquired extensive experience in dispensing justice at the High Court. He is the seniormost puisne Judge in his parent High Court. He is considered to be a competent judge and possesses a high level of integrity and conduct required of a person holding high judicial office. While recommending his name, the Collegium is conscious of the fact that the High Court of Madhya Pradesh is already represented by a Chief Justice among the Chief Justices of the High Courts."

Once the appointment comes through, which is most likely, his elevation will come in the wake of Justice Sanjay Kumar Mishra’s retirement on December 28, 2023.

Justice S Chandrashekhar temporarily held the Chief Justice responsibilities until this recent appointment.

Justice Sarangi’s journey in the legal realm began in December 1985 as a practicing lawyer.

He has been associated with several Bar Associations and has represented a diverse clientele, including government undertakings and private parties, in various legal capacities.

He is recognized for his integrity, hard work, and exceptional legal acumen, which he honed under the mentorship of the late Gangadhar Rath, a former Advocate General of Odisha.

His legal career includes handling cases across a broad spectrum of law, contributing to his vast expertise.

Justice Sarangi’s academic credentials are equally impressive, with degrees in law from M.S. Law College, Cuttack, and a Ph.D. in Law from Sambalpur University.

His rise in the judicial world began with his elevation as a judge of the Orissa High Court on June 20, 2013.

During his tenure as a judge, he authored over 1056 reported judgments, showcasing his profound judicial insight.
